What is life like for animals in a zoo when no one is watching? What kind of relationship do wildlife keepers and animals on the verge of extinction have? How do you tackle a cataracts operation on a dragon? What challenges does a nutritionist face when feeding rare animals who are virtually unknown to the outside world? How do you go about giving an elephant a pedicure?

Mediacrest and Discovery begin production of "Crónicas del zoo. Bioparques que salvan especies", ("The Zoo Chronicles") a reality show that, over the following months, will follow the life and adventures of animals at BIOPARC’s locations in Fuengirola, Valencia and the Aquarium in Gijón. The show will reveal the way the animals relate to each other and the relationships they forge with the keepers of these new, state-of-the-art wildlife parks. These bonds are focused on ensuring the best possible care for these animals.

The primary objective of these centers, that faithfully recreate the same exotic habitats of the species they host, is to help bring society closer to the beauty of nature. The series hopes to motivate and bring about the necessary changes that will help us to live in harmony with our planet and protect its rich biodiversity.

"Crónicas del zoo" is a thrilling journey full of emotion, surprises and discovery about incredible animals, their challenges and what makes them unique. A show about people who dedicate their lives to caring and protecting them while also showing the rest of us how to appreciate them.

Mediacrest's film crews will follow the day-to-day running of these nature centers, what happens when doors close; something visitors never get the chance to see. We will get to know the keepers and the challenges they face every day to maintain and protect endangered species.

Hidden, robotic and movement-sensor cameras, mounted on remote-controlled devices will reveal the gripping and fascinating interaction between animals of the same species as well as with members of other species sharing the same enclosure. A life on display that’s full of challenges, passion, humor, curiosities and adventure in which the bonds these animals build with the humans around them is supremely important.

The show is directed by Fernando González Sitges, with scripts by Pablo Masía and Beltrán Parra, produced by Laura Casamayor and Mediacrest’s Head of Documentaries, Gerardo Olivares as Executive Producer.
